An American in the Pyrenees

Like must people, I began riding my bike when I was a child, and for a few years it was my preferred form of transportation.  It was the way I moved around, ran errands and got lost exploring.  Then, I grew up, got a car and my interest in cycling vanished.

In 1992, a good friend of mine wanted a riding partner and gave me a bike.  A Specialized Epic Comp (carbon and aluminum) that rekindled my love for cycling.  A few years later I went to my first cycling camp and the whole world of cycling hit me in the face!   I was exposed to clipless pedals, cycling magazines, the Tour de France, the Giro d’ Italia and the Vuelta a España.  I was hooked!  I even shaved my legs for the first time and even got a massage!

Then, many years and many cycling adventures later, I met Robin Farina and Revolution Coaching.  I was impressed by her accessibility, honesty and expertise.  I decided to take my training to another level and thanks to her I became a better, stronger and faster cyclist.  So, when Robin organized a cycling camp in the French Pyrenees attending two stages of the Tour, it was no brainer and I had to go.

We stayed in a 16th century chateau, with great food (our own chef), great wine and awesome cycling companions.  We had daily-guided rides through the countryside with challenging routes and plenty of climbing.  Then, we actually saw two stages of Tour and saw the main contenders ride by, Froome, Quintana, Urán, Contador, Arú, Barguil, etc.  There is nothing like being part of the greatest show on earth, even if it is only for two stages.

Still, my fondest memories are from my fellow cyclist.  We came from different places, with different backgrounds, but with the common goal to ride and have fun.  Friendships were made and new cycling companions found.   As camp came to an end I could only wonder when I would come to camp again and ride with my new friends.  Robin’s Pyrenees Camp exceeded my expectations, and as I continue my training under her supervision, I can only wonder how awesome my next cycling adventure with her and Revolution Coaching is going to be.
